PRISTINA, 13 September 2001 (OSCE) - The sixteenth class of police cadets from the OSCE-run Kosovo Police Service School (KPSS) graduates this Saturday, September 15.
This brings the total number of trainee police officers to 4,105. All of them will have successfully graduated from the school's basic training course since it opened in September 1999. Class 16 consists of 259 cadets of whom 26 represent smaller communities in Kosovo and 29 women.
The keynote speech at the ceremony will be given by the KFOR Commander, Lt. Gen. Thorstein Skiaker.
Beginning with Class 16, cadets entering the KPSS now undergo twelve weeks of basic police instruction. The OSCE also has developed and is delivering a re-certification programme for all Kosovo Police Service officers. More than 1,400 police officers have taken part in this course and demonstrated proficiency in a range of skills they have acquired through their daily work. Other advanced courses and specialised training, including criminal investigation and senior management courses, continue.
Class 16 marks the fulfilment of the original mandate given to the OSCE to provide democratically-oriented basic police training for at least 4,000 locally recruited police officers. The KPSS has now been authorized to provide basic police training for 5,700 officers by the end of 2002.
Media are welcome to attend the graduation ceremony, which will take place on 15 September, at 10:30 hours, in the Sports Centre of the University of Pristina.
