Kosovo Political Party Forum to discuss Central Election Commission
PRISTINA 23 March 2001
PRISTINA, 23 March 2001 - The leaders of Kosovo's political parties have been invited to take part in the first session this year of the Political Party Consultative Forum. The event, which will take place on 23 March in the OSCE-supported Political Parties Service Centre in Prishtinë/Pristina, will be chaired by the Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Ambassador Daan Everts.
The forum is a mechanism, set up by the OSCE, through which political parties can talk to each other and to the international community. Its main purpose is to provide an opportunity for all political parties active in Kosovo to discuss issues related to the development of Kosovo's political parties and to the development of democracy.
Last year, the forum provided a vital link with the political parties during the run-up to the municipal elections. It was the main means of informing them about the electoral rules and of hearing about their own opinions and needs.
Ambassador Everts will be briefing the parties on the reconstituted Central Election Commission. The CEC, which will be the main regulatory body for Kosovo-wide elections, is scheduled to hold its first meeting earlier in the day.
This year, the OSCE is continuing its efforts to strengthen the organizational capacity of Kosovo's political parties, to help them develop their policy platforms and prepare for central elections. There will be a particular focus on those parties that have demonstrated that they are viable and have a popular mandate. At the local level, political party development will increasingly include the mainly Serb-populated areas.
