Enthusiasm of Kosovo voters praised
PRISTINA 28 October 2000
PRISTINA, 28 October 2000 - The OSCE Head of Mission, Ambassador Daan Everts, has described the atmosphere in Kosovo today, as thousands of voters turned out to cast their ballots, as festive and celebratory.
He was speaking in Pristina following a visit to polling centres in Prizren and the southern municipality of Dragash with the UN Special Representative, Dr Bernard Kouchner, this morning.
Ambassador Everts said such a huge turnout so early in the day was very encouraging.
"We saw long lines of people waiting to vote. They were very keen to participate in the process and the mood was festive."
He praised both the voters and the political entities for the calmness of the poll so far, saying it was indicative of their desire for a free, fair and democratic election.
Ambassador Everts and Dr. Kouchner also visited polling centres where members of the minority Turkish and Roma communities are voting. He described the atmosphere in these areas as exactly the same massive turnout and a tolerant, celebratory mood.
