Kosovo voters list being updated
PRISTINA 1 September 2000
PRISTINA, 1 September 2000 - The process of updating and correcting the Kosovo Provisional Voters List for the 28 October municipal elections is now under way following the conclusion of the Confirmation, Additions and Challenges period, which ended Wednesday, 30August.
This period was a standard pre-election procedure designed to give eligible voters an opportunity to confirm that their own entries on the Provisional Voters Lists are correct and to identify problems or omissions which can be corrected for the Final Voters List.
Approximately 200,000 people throughout Kosovo availed of the opportunity to view the Provisional Voters Lists during the 10-day Confirmation, Additions and Appeals period. As envisaged, the process identified omissions and errors on the lists, which are now being addressed and rectified by the OSCE elections department.
The process of correcting the Provisional Voters List and producing the Final Voters List will take approximately one month. This process is expected to correct the vast majority of errors.
Once the Final Voters List has been produced, the electorate will have another opportunity to
view it to make sure their names are on it through a quick-check programme.
During the past few days, there has been a significant degree of misinformation concerning the voters lists. The OSCE Director of Election Operations, Jeff Fischer, has assured all those eligible to vote in the local elections on 28 October that no one will lose their democratic right to do so.
Of the few who may not find their names on that Final Voters List, they will - if they have a valid registration receipt and proof of identity - be permitted to cast a ballot on election day. In such a case, the voter will be issued with a conditional ballot.
