Temporary media commissioner orders "Dita" to publish reply
PRISTINA 12 July 2000
PRISTINA, 12 July 2000 - The Temporary Media Commissioner (TMC) has ordered the Pristina-based newspaper, "Dita", to publish a reply from an individual named in an article which appeared in the paper's June 26th edition. The article was found to be in violation of the recently-issued regulation on the print media. Failure to comply with the order will result in fines and possible closure of the newspaper.
In addition, the TMC has also issued two warning letters to "Dita". The first relates to the naming of a second individual in the same article of June 26th referred to above. The second warning letter refers to an article which appeared in the newspaper on July 4th and cites particular concerns over what the TMC described as "....a clearly identifiable photograph of various individuals, including that of two individuals, who are still residing in Kosovo together with personal details about where they currently reside...".
The TMC has issued these warnings and sanctions in accordance with the powers invested in him under the print regulation. The regulation states that the publication of information which could threaten a person's life, safety or security is prohibited.
