OSCE Media Representative condemns the murder and kidnapping of journalists in Iraq
VIENNA, 31 August 2004 - The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Miklos Haraszti, condemned the recent murder of Italian freelance journalist Enzo Baldoni, who was executed in Iraq last week by his kidnappers. He also demanded the release of two French journalists, Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot, held in captivity in Iraq.
"I am appalled by the cruel assassination of Enzo Baldoni, who was only trying to help the Iraqi people, both as a humanitarian and a reporter," said the OSCE Media Representative. "Baldoni's execution and the kidnapping of Chesnot and Malbrunot are attacks not merely against innocent people but against freedom of information worldwide and in Iraq".
According to Reporters Without Borders, at least 39 media professionals have been killed in Iraq since the start of military activities in March 2003. Twenty-four have been killed this year in the course of their work. Two journalists are still missing.
"My Office and I plan to take a closer look at what could possibly be done to try to ensure a safer environment for journalists working in conflict areas. We have already worked with journalists' associations on this matter. But what the moment demands is that this shameful and cowardly publicity manoeuvre of trying to get extra coverage by kidnapping and killing journalists be stopped," said Miklos Haraszti.
