Ongoing inspections of Dozhd TV in Russia could hinder its work, says OSCE media freedom representative
VIENNA, 10 December 2015 – OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today said that the recent wave of inspections of the independent television channel Dozhd by various state institutions could interfere with its work.
“These multiple inspections could hinder Dozhd’s operations and broadcasts,” Mijatović said. “This television channel must be allowed to continue its important work and make its independent voice heard.”
According to reports, Dozhd has been subject to inspection of the prosecutor’s office, as well as emergency and tax authorities since 7 December. The prosecutor’s inspection has reportedly been initiated upon request by anonymous citizens’ regarding the channel’s compliance with legislation on countering extremism and terrorism, labour and licensing.
In 2014, the Representative expressed concern about the exclusion of TV Dozhd from the major cable and satellite operators. (see //www.osce.org/fom/111038)
