Media freedom representative meets Serbian Culture Minister to discuss incoming OSCE Chairmanship
VIENNA, 23 December 2014 – OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović met today with Serbian Minister of Culture and Information Ivan Tasovac to discuss the plans and priorities of the incoming OSCE Chairmanship and media freedom issues in Serbia and the OSCE region.
“It is positive that next year’s Serbian Chairmanship will pay special attention to media freedom in the OSCE region and the safety of journalists,” Mijatović said.
The Representative noted that Serbia established a special commission to help investigate killings of journalists which could be applied in other OSCE participating States.
“Serbia respects freedom of the media and expression, our government condemns in the strongest possible terms any attempt to violate freedom of the media and free expression and violence against journalists” Tasovac said.
Tasovac told the Representative about the progress of investigations into hacking attacks on media websites. He said the Ministry of Internal Affairs is working on resolving all attacks on journalists.
They also discussed the recently adopted media laws that are an essential foundation for reforming the public service broadcaster, introducing digitalization and ensuring that the state ends its involvement in media ownership.
