OSCE media freedom representative welcomes UN General Assembly’s resolution on safety of journalists

VIENNA, 19 December 2013 – OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today welcomed the UN General Assembly’s adoption of its first resolution on safety of journalists and the issue of impunity.
“We are witnessing attacks on members of the media every day and we all need to work together to improve their safety. The resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly is a big step forward in the joint efforts we need to take to protect journalists around the world,” Mijatović said.
The UN General Assembly plenary yesterday passed a resolution by consensus on safety of journalists and the issue of impunity. The resolution also names November 2 the International Day to End Impunity for crimes against journalists.
“Impunity is still one of the major threats to freedom of expression and free media and it must be eradicated. We need to raise awareness on this issue and come 2 November every year we will all campaign to end impunity,” Mijatović said.
The Representative recently launched a global campaign to end impunity for crimes committed against journalists. The campaign includes a video in English, Russian and Serbian and is available at www.youtube.com/oscerfom.
