Annual OSCE Economic Forum to address energy issues
VIENNA 26 May 1998
VIENNA, 26 May 1998 - The Sixth Economic Forum of the OSCE will take place in Prague on 1-5 June. This year's Forum will consist of two separate but linked events: a meeting on "Security Aspects of Energy Developments in the OSCE Area" on 1-3 June, and the "Economic Dimension Implementation Review Conference" on 4 and 5 June.
The Forum was established to address issues relating to economic aspects of security and to promote cooperation in economics, science, technology and the environment. The OSCE believes that cooperation among States in these fields greatly contributes to comprehensive security and stability in Europe.
The agenda of the meeting on energy covers topics such as the security implications of the division of Caspian Sea resources; the environmental implications of nuclear waste problems; the deregulation, liberalization, privatization and/or reform of energy markets; and the impact of energy distribution networks on national and regional security. OSCE States will be represented by high level delegations, many at Minister or Deputy Minister level. Speakers include representatives of OSCE States, as well as representatives of other international organizations and private business.
The purpose of Economic Dimension Implementation Review Conference is to examine how OSCE States are implementing commitments in the areas of economics, environment, science and technology as contained in particular in the 1990 "Bonn Document." The document itself is expected to come under some scrutiny as to its relevance in a much-changed Europe ten years later.
Press Arrangements:
Press Briefing: Chairman of the Forum, Minister Jerzy Kropiwnicki and OSCE Coordinator for Economic and Environmental Activities, Mr. Tom Price, will hold a press briefing on Monday, 1 June at 9:30 at the meeting venue.
Venue/Accreditation: Czernin Palace, Loretánské nám. 5, 11800 Prague 1
Access: The opening and closing sessions of the Meeting on 1-3 June are open to the press. The first plenary meeting is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
