OSCE Chairperson-in-Office calls for international verification of election results in FRY
VIENNA 29 September 2000
VIENNA, 29 September 2000 - The Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE, Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner, citing the substantial differences between the figures published by the Federal Election Commission and the findings of non partisan groups as well as opposition sources, called for a verification of the election results by international experts. She offered OSCE assistance in this process.
"The voters of FRY have a right to know the true outcome of the vote," Ms. Ferrero-Waldner said. "With no public disclosure of how they came to their figures, the FEC results can hardly be considered legitimate."
She noted that the opposition has conducted a detailed parallel vote count in all polling stations. "If the Federal Election Commission has nothing to hide, the full details of all the results must be published," Ms. Ferrero-Waldner added.
Ms. Ferrero-Waldner expressed her support for an immediate lifting of the oil embargo in recognition of the overwhelming vote of the Yugoslav people for democratic change.
