Chairman-in-Office appoints new Head of OSCE Presence in Albania

OSLO, 2 August 1999 - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Foreign Minister Knut Vollebæk of Norway, has appointed Ambassador Geert-Hinrich Ahrens of Germany to the position as Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania. Ambassador Ahrens succeeds Ambassador Daan Everts, who last month was appointed Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo.
Dr. Geert-Hinrich Ahrens is currently the German Ambassador to Colombia. He has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career with solid Balkans experience, including serving at the International Peace Conference on the Former Yugoslavia in the Hague (1991-92) and at the Geneva International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia (1992-96). In April-June 1999, Ambassador Ahrens was Special Envoy of the European Presidency to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. He speaks most of the Balkan languages, including Albanian.
