OSCE Chairman urges Ukraine's top political leaders to resume negotiations
MADRID, 25 May 2007 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, expressed concern today about rising political tensions in Kyiv and called for negotiations to be resumed.
"I am deeply concerned about the escalation of political tensions in Kyiv and with law enforcement agencies' use of force," he said, adding that continued tension could seriously endanger the stability of the country.
"I urge President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych to return to the negotiating table as soon as possible and to respect the agreement they reached on 4 May."
The Chairman-in-Office called for a full respect of democratic institutions and encouraged both sides to resume talks in a constructive manner to ease tensions.
He reiterated that the OSCE was ready to provide assistance, including sending an envoy.
