TASHKENT, 12 April 2007 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, condemned today the deadly terrorist attacks in Algeria.
"I strongly condemn yesterday's terrorist attacks in Algiers, and want to express my support to and solidarity for the government of Algeria," he said. "I am appalled by the attack and its tragic outcome, and express my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims."
Algeria is one of the OSCE's 11 Partners for Co-operation.
The Chairman-in-Office, who is touring Central Asia, called his Algerian counterpart yesterday evening from Ashgabad, Turkmenistan, to assure him the 56-country OSCE and its Spanish Chairmanship support the Algerian Government at this difficult time.
Minister Moratinos said he planned to ask the OSCE's Permanent Council, which meets weekly in Vienna, to honour the victims by observing a minute of silence.
