OSCE supports resource centre on border demarcation in southern Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan’s first resource centre on border delimitation and demarcation was opened on 1 February 2013 in the city of Osh in southern Kyrgyzstan.
The OSCE Centre in Bishkek supported renovation work and provided equipment for the facility, which will function as an office for the members of the Kyrgyz Republic Governmental Commission on border delimitation and demarcation (Parity Commission), as well as a research centre and platform for trainings and meetings.
The OSCE Centre is helping to establish a network of resource centres following an official request in 2011 for assistance with building the capacity of the country’s Parity Commission on border delimitation and demarcation. A second centre is planned to be established in Bishkek this year.
The Osh centre will support the Parity Commission in conducting the process of border delimitation and demarcation by serving as a location for negotiations with neighbouring countries, as well as a research facility for members of the Parity Commission on technical aspects of border delimitation and demarcation such as cartography and international law.
Ross Brown, the Head of Political-Military Unit of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, said: “The OSCE Centre in Bishkek is pleased to support this initiative of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Foreign Ministry to address the important and complex issue of border delimitation and demarcation.”
