OSCE Centre in Bishkek trains Kyrgyzstan’s prosecutors on human rights
The third and last in a series of training sessions on human rights for Kyrgyzstan’s prosecutors concluded on 23 June 2012 in Bishkek.
The six-day sessions were supported by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek in co-operation with the Regional UN/OHCHR Office for Central Asia within the framework of the EU-funded project on civil monitoring for human rights protection and conflict prevention and with the Training Centre of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Some 72 prosecutors from all parts of the country participated in the three training courses which focused on international human rights standards, including OSCE human dimension commitments, and their implementation in Kyrgyzstan.
“Prosecutors play a crucial role in ensuring the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The training sessions aimed at increasing their skills at implementing national legislation in light of international human rights standards,” said Fabio Piana, Senior Human Dimension Officer at the OSCE Centre in Bishkek. “The OSCE has for many years enjoyed good co-operation with the Office of the Prosecutor General, including through a Memorandum of Understanding on human rights and fundamental freedoms that was signed recently with state authorities, international organizations and civil society. We look forward to continuing our work together.”
“The protection of human rights is one of the most important things in the work of prosecutors,” said Liliya Isabekova, Deputy Head of the Training Centre of the Prosecutors General’s Office. “During the training sessions prosecutors from all parts of the country have completed a course on human rights, which will be helpful in their professional activities.”
The training courses were conducted as part of the OSCE Centre’s project on addressing human rights in closed facilities in Kyrgyzstan through nationally owned human rights mechanisms.
