The courses, organized by non-governmental organization "Leader", aim at strengthening the partnership between the police and the public in preventing crime and maintaining public order, raising awareness of police reform priorities, enhancing the capacity of Local Crime Prevention Centres in strategic planning, and strengthening co-operation between the Centres and local authorities, business and local communities.
Ambassador Andrew Tesoriere, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, said: "An extensive network of 556 Local Crime Prevention Centres across Kyrgyzstan offers an excellent platform for bringing together police and citizens to address community matters. The Centres are the very personification of community policing in action. The training seminars will build on how to strengthen these Centres, recognizing the key role of the elders, the aksakals, as well as young people, women and business groups in solving local issues."
Banur Abdieva, Chairperson of Leader, added: "Recent events in the Kyrgyz Republic demonstrated the importance of building trust and strengthening partnerships between the police and the public. We hope that our seminars will contribute to this."
In addition to training, the Local Crime Prevention Centres will receive packages of legal literature, and the Centres that were recognized as the best in Issyk-Kul province in 2009, will receive desktop computers.
