OSCE Centre supports conference on prevention of juvenile delinquency and crime
BISHKEK, 2 June 2010 - How to effectively prevent juvenile delinquency and crime was the focus of a one-day international conference held today at the Interior Ministry's Police Academy with the support of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek.
More than 50 participants from state institutions, civil society, law enforcement bodies, educational institutions and international agencies discussed priority areas for multi-agency co-operation to prevent delinquency and crime among youth.
International experts from Estonia, the Russian Federation, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States shared best practices from their countries.
"This conference contributed to efforts to protect the rights of the youth and to promote their development. More effective multi-agency co-operation and co-ordination is key in preventing crime and reducing the risk that juveniles become repeat offenders," said Lilian Darii, the Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek.
Almaz Bazarbaev, Head of the Police Academy, added:
"By identifying priorities for joint efforts to foster a law-abiding younger generation and to improve child protection and family policies, we create a strong base for further efforts to prevent crime among Kyrgyzstan's youth."
Conference participants developed recommendations and a resolution on improving child protection and family policies as well as on youth development programmes.
