OSCE Centre supports co-ordination meeting on disaster mitigation in southern Kyrgyzstan
OSH, Kyrgyzstan, 8 December 2009 - A co-ordination meeting on mitigation strategies for natural disasters in southern Kyrgyzstan, supported by the OSCE's Centre's field office, was held in Osh today.
The meeting organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations brought together representatives of the Ministry, local non-governmental organizations and international organizations including the UN Development Programme and other international organizations.
"This regional meeting complements the co-ordination structure created for rapid response to natural disasters, REACT, which followed on a need to harmonize disaster prevention and preparedness efforts by international and national institutions. The recently established Osh-based Regional Training Centre is also a direct result of this work," said Lilian Darii, Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek.
Bakir Jolchiev, the Kyrgyz Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, added: "Such concerted work is needed to ensure that project implementation is more effective and harmonized. The Minstry of Emergency Situations has a strong interest in a working arrangement where the role and responsibility of each key actor in disaster mitigation and response is clearly defined."
During the meeting the participants discussed and adopted the final version of the Regulation of the Southern Regional Co-ordination Centre.
