OSCE Centre holds Kyrgyz-language journalism training for young journalists in Naryn province
NARYN, Kyrgyzstan, 14 September 2009 - A two-day OSCE Centre-supported training course to help journalists improve their coverage in the Kyrgyz language began today at the Naryn Media Resource Centre in south-eastern Kyrgyzstan.
Six young journalists selected for the programme will learn about international standards of journalism as they prepare stories. The drafts as well as selected works by the journalists will be available on the news-education blog of the Public Union of Journalists (PUJ), www.aimaknews.kg, which is also supported by the OSCE Centre. The workshop is being held in the Kyrgyz language.
"The development of quality journalism and journalists in Kyrgyz, the national language, is essential for the international and national awareness of all Kyrgyzstan's citizens, urban and rural. This awareness enables citizens and journalists alike to contribute constructively to key national debates. This training workshop aims to support this dynamic process, focusing on the new generation of young journalists," said Ambassador Andrew Tesoriere, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek.
The journalists will continue their training after the seminar through online courses with the PUJ, which will also publish their work on its blog.
PUJ director Marat Tokoev added: "Improving the quality of Kyrgyz-language journalism by young and promising journalists to equal international standards is an acute need in the provinces. This training course is important in that it reaches out to all the seven provinces of Kyrgyzstan."
Similar training workshops were held in Batken, Osh and Jalal-Abad, and further sessions will be held in Karakol and Talas. In total 72 people across the country have been chosen to be trained through the programme.
The training course is part of an OSCE Centre programme that aims to build the capacity of regional media, particularly by improving local reporters' skills in economic, environmental and investigative journalism.
