OSCE Centre supports moving of Forensic Centre to new premises for the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry
BISHKEK, 28 May 2009 - A ceremony today marked the move to new premises of an Interior Ministry Forensic Centre, with the support of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek The Centre supervises all forensic units in Kyrgyzstan.
The newly refurbished and equipped Centre features five forensic laboratories, including ballistics, fingerprint, trace evidence, technical examination of documents and chemical laboratories. The OSCE Centre provided equipment such as a portable videocamera and projector for examinations, a laminating machine for evidence, a refrigerator for chemical reagents, furniture and other items.
"This Centre will promote good forensic investigations, which help catch criminals and avoid convicting the innocent," said Ambassador Andrew Tesoriere, Head of the OSCE Centre.
Interior Minister Moldomusa Kongantiev added: "Now with a better and single-point location, the Forensic Centre will improve evidence-based criminal investigation in Kyrgyzstan. Better collection and analysis of evidence will help ensure justice."
The technical support is a part of the OSCE Centre's Police Reform Programme, which aims to strengthen the institutional, operational and educational capacity of the Kyrgyz Police and reinforce its legal framework.
