OSCE Centre, Kyrgyz Interior Ministry hold conference on crime prevention
BISHKEK, 28 May 2008 - Crime prevention, modern investigation techniques and forensic analysis practices are on the agenda of a conference that opened in Bishkek today.
The two-day event, supported by the OSCE Centre, brought together some 60 Kyrgyz police officers, representatives of police training institutions and law departments, as well as international experts from Bulgaria, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine. The conference is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Kyrgyz Criminal Police.
"An important element in preventing and fighting crime is good communication with the wider public," said Ambassador Andrew Tesoriere, the Head of the OSCE Centre. "The OSCE continues to be a strong partner in Kyrgyzstan's vigorous efforts to combat and prevent crime. This meeting offers a good opportunity to exchange best practices in tackling crime."
Deputy Interior Minister Melis Turganbaev added: "In order to fight crime, we must make sure that a state-wide system of crime prevention is in place and operational, and that government agencies, educational and medical institutions, business representatives and civil society members work closer."
The conference is a part of a project of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and the Interior Ministry to build the capacity of the Kyrgyz criminal police and ensure that human rights are observed during police investigations.
