OSCE Field Office helps address socio-economic and environmental problems of Mailuu-Suu, attract investment
JALALABAT 22 December 2006
JALALABAT, Kyrgyzstan, 22 December 2006 - The results of an OSCE-supported socio-economic analysis, as well as an investment strategy developed for the city of Mailuu-Suu were presented in Jalalabat today.
Two NGOs, Civil Society Support Centre (CSSC) and Economic Information Dissemination Centre (EIDC), and an investment analysis firm iCAP, conducted the research as part of an OSCE Osh Field Office project entitled 'Improving Environmental Security Conditions through Economic Development: Mailuu-Suu Socio- Economic Assessment and Investment Strategy Development'.
"The OSCE is aware of the problems and difficulties that the population of Mailuu-Suu faces," said Jerome Bouyjou, the Head of the OSCE Osh Field Office. "Environmental problems, such as radiation, landslides, and dangerous landfill work, need to be addressed. Severe socio-economic problems like unemployment and poverty force people to migrate or do any kind of work (for example, nickel and metal collection from dump sites) in order to generate income, thus jeopardizing their lives."
CSSC used participatory community appraisal methods to identify socio-economic problems and their causes, possible solutions, and local perspectives for possible economic activities. Experts from iCAP hired by EIDC conducted a deep investment appraisal of Mailuu-Suu and on the basis of the socio-economic and investment analysis developed an investment strategy for the town.
"Without improving the economic situation it is difficult to solve environmental problems," added Jerome Bouyjou. "The OSCE supported this project with the hope that a thorough socio-economic assessment and an investment strategy could be the first step in assisting the local government, potential investors, and donor organizations in encouraging economic development and thus improving environmental security conditions."
The OSCE has also donated equipment to the Sanitary Epidemiological Station and Centre for Family Medicine in Mailuu-Suu for testing radiation and radon levels, as well as for evaluating throat and lung illness related to glass dust inhalation.
EIDC will prepare an analytical summary document of the research results and a socio-economic and investment map of the town, which will be available on www.eidc.kg and help promote the investment strategy of Mailuu-Suu externally. EIDC will continue working to attract the attention of investors to this information and the economic possibilities in Mailuu-Suu.
