Role of radio in digital age discussed at OSCE–supported International Media Forum in Bishkek

BISHKEK, 6 May 2016 – The role of radio in the digital age was the focus of an OSCE-supported International Media Forum held today in Bishkek, with the aim of exchanging experiences between representatives of local and foreign radio stations and introducing participants to new technologies for developing radio broadcasting in Kyrgyzstan.
The Forum, organized by the Kyrgyz Public TV and Radio Corporation and backed by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, is the largest event of its kind in Kyrgyzstan. The theme of this year’s Forum commemorated the 85th anniversary of Kyrgyz Radio and gathered representatives from all radio channels working across the country.
“This Forum is a unique opportunity to celebrate the role of radio in providing access to information and in empowering people in remote communities by making their voices heard,” said Daniele Rumolo, acting deputy head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek. “I encourage state authorities to support access to radio for the population across the country and create favourable working conditions for radio journalists to fulfil their important mission.”
Speakers from China, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and Turkey shared their experience on radio management and development. Media professionals also discussed new broadcasting trends and formats, as well as the influence of new media.
The International Media Forum is part of the OSCE Centre’s projects on promoting national dialogue and fundamental freedoms, and building Kyrgyzstan’s capacity on its information security needs.
Following the Forum, on 7 May, the OSCE Centre will organize a workshop for the event participants on data journalism and media labs. This training will be conducted by Moscow-based media expert Tatyana Tihomirova at the premises of the Public TV and Radio Corporation Centre.
