OSCE supports public dialogue on results of 2015 parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan
BISHKEK, 24 November 2015 - The OSCE Centre in Bishkek today organized a public discussion on the results of the 4 October 2015 parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan, focusing on the lessons learnt and ways of further improving election-related legislation and electoral administration in the country.
The event, co-organized with the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) and International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), brought together 80 participants from the government, parliament, Supreme Court, General Prosecutor’s office, election commissions, civil society, and international organizations.
Keynote speakers included Farid Niyazov, Head of Kyrgyzstan’s Presidential Apparatus; Aaly Karashev, First Deputy Prime Minister; Tuigunaaly Abdraimov, CCER chairperson; and Taiyrbek Sarpashev, chairperson of the State Registry Service.
The Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek Sergey Kapinos noted that the upcoming municipal and presidential elections will be critical moments for Kyrgyzstan’s further development. “The international observers acknowledged that the parliamentary elections in October were competitive and offered voters a wide range of choices,” he said. “However they also highlighted the need for better procedures and increased transparency.”
During four working group sessions, participants discussed the role and activities of the election commissions, the use of new voting technologies, voter registration and electoral dispute resolution.
The event is part of the OSCE Centre’s project on promoting genuine democratic parliamentary elections in the Kyrgyz Republic in 2015.
