OSCE supports international conference on parliamentary democracy development
BISHKEK, 11 June 2015 - The OSCE Centre in Bishkek supports a one-day international conference on parliamentary democracy development organized by the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic taking place today in Bishkek.
Its aim is to analyze the work of the fifth convocation of the Parliament and discuss future steps on the development of parliamentary democracy in Kyrgyzstan.
“The OSCE attaches great importance to the development of democratic institutions, such as parliaments”, said John MacGregor, Acting Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, at the International Research and Practical Conference. “Within the mandate of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek to promote the organization’s commitments, there is a large project to support parliamentarianism in Kyrgyzstan.”
Welcome remarks to the participants of the conference were delivered by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambaev, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Speaker of Parliament Asylbek Jeenbekov, and Prime Minister Temir Sariev. The event brought together national and foreign parliamentarians, high-level government officials, academics, international organizations, diplomats, civil society activists and journalists.
The participants discussed current challenges and talked about next steps in parliamentary democracy development in Kyrgyzstan, based on best international practices.
The OSCE Centre in Bishkek supported the conference as a part of its work on promoting parliamentary democracy in the country.
