OSCE helps set up police neighbourhood office in southern Kyrgyzstan to tackle car thefts
A neighborhood inspector’s office opened with the OSCE support in Kok-Art micro district of Kyrgyzstan’s southern city of Jalal-Abad on 1 November 2013. The project was proposed and supported by the local community to counteract a recent surge in the number of car thefts in the area with some 30,000 residents.
Various members of the community came together to assist with this project: the local property owner gave space in his building for the station, the police provided money and committed to man the site 24 hours, the mayor’s office also helped to finance the initiative. The OSCE Police Reform Programme and with the Community Security Initiative assisted the local stakeholders in renovating and furnishing the office space.
Local District Police Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sabyr Daliev said: “This is a real example of police-public partnership, and we trust people in this area will benefit from this office.”
