Information book for demobilized soldiers to be launched in Bosnia and Herzegovina
SARAJEVO 28 June 2002
SARAJEVO, 28 June 2002 - An information book for demobilized soldiers will be launched today in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The book has been put together by the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federation Ministry of Defence. It was financed by the NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR), as a contribution to the demobilization efforts of the Government of the Federation, one of the two entities which makes up Bosnia and Herzegovina. So far, over 9,000 Federation soldiers have signed demobilization contracts, and a similar handbook is underway for soldiers currently serving in the armed forces of the country's second entity, the Republika Srpska.
"We agree with the Federation Government that it is of paramount importance to help former soldiers to transition into a successful civilian life", said Robert Beecroft, Head of the OSCE Mission, at a press conference today. "Many soldiers need assistance through training and job search in order to reintegrate into society. The OSCE Mission is committed to helping former soldiers and providing them with relevant information and support in order to ease this transition. We are very proud to support this project".
"This Guide will be of great benefit to all demobilized soldiers and all unemployed people, we hope", said Mijo Anic, Bosnia and Herzegovina's Federal Minister of Defence, who attended the launching ceremony at Sarajevo's Dom Vojske together with Deputy Defence Minister Ferid Buljubasic and a number of soldiers.
The information guide provides information on training, employment, housing and credit programmes, consulting, laws and regulations. This includes information on how to establish small businesses and important addresses for relevant institutions. Although the handbook is mainly intended for demobilized soldiers, any citizen may benefit from it. A reprint is planned for later this year, and will then include updated information on organizations and programmes in the Federation. The effort will be repeated in a special edition for the Republika Srpska, working in co-operation with the entity's government.
The Federal Ministry of Defence hosted the book launching ceremony, which was also by the Bosniac member of the country's tri-partite presidency, Beriz Belkic, and General John Sylvester, SFOR Commander.
