OSCE condemns violence and riots in Mostar
SARAJEVO 6 April 2001
SARAJEVO, 6 April 2001 - OSCE Head of Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Robert L. Barry, condemned Friday's organized violence against Federation and international law enforcement officials during an operation at Hercegovacka Bank in Mostar.
Ambassador Barry denounces, in the strongest possible terms, the organized riot, which took place at around 11.00 in the Head Office of the Hercegovacka Bank and some branch offices.
The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina is concerned about reports which indicate that several participants in the operation were attacked and injured by bank employees and those described as "thugs". The Mission demands that the local authorities and political leaders act immediately to bring calm to the situation and calls upon all citizens to act within the law.
Those who participated in any way in this attack and also prevented the participants of the operation from carrying out their legal duty should be dealt with according to the law.
The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace GFAP), the OSCE Mission activities are to: promote Democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society, foster the development of professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists, monitor and advance the Human Rights situation, supervise the conduct of Elections, and encourage Regional Stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures.
