SARAJEVO 6 September 2000
SARAJEVO, 5 September 2000 - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina has released figures for its general election budget. The November 2000 general elections, with a budget of more than 9 million Euros, are slated to be the last financed by the OSCE.
"These are the last elections funded by the OSCE," said Kare Vollan, the OSCE Director of Elections. "I encourage the BiH institutions to get ready to take over the responsibility for administering and financing future elections."
The present budget is funded through contributions from OSCE member states and is the sixth OSCE-funded election. In addition to the OSCE budget, entity governments have been asked to allocate funds and provide in-kind services for the general elections.
The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace, the OSCE Mission activities are to promote democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society; foster the development of Professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists; monitor and advance the human rights situation; supervize the conduct of elections, and encourage regional stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures. The OSCE Mission continues to work closely with other international organizations and local institutions to implement the Dayton Peace Accords.
