Advisory Group meets to discuss legislative reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO, 1 August 2000 - The Advisory Group on Defamation and Freedom of Information Legislation is meeting from 1 to 3 August to review and develop Defamation legislation. In addition to the work of the Advisory Group, the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina will organize a series of public information and consultative meetings in the weeks following the public release of the draft legislation.
Established following the High Representative's Decision last year requiring the development and adoption of laws protecting citizens' and journalists' freedom of expression, the Advisory Group is responsible for the development of draft Defamation and Freedom of Information legislation. The Advisory Group first developed Freedom of Information legislation that was
Released to the public on June 28, 2000, the Freedom of Information legislation guarantees the right of citizens and journalists to access information held by government and other public bodies. Defamation legislation will protect the right of citizens and journalists to impart information and ideas without the threat of undue interference.
The Office of the High Representative and the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina will oversee the drafting process, which is expected to continue for several months.
