NGOs develop common strategy for fall elections
SARAJEVO 11 July 2000
SARAJEVO, 11 July 2000 - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina funded and facilitated a conference on the "Role of NGOs in the Pre-Election and Election process" organized by the NGO Coalition "Elections 2000". The event gathered 56 local NGOs from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina for a presentation of the new rules and regulations of the Provisional Election Commission (PEC) and work on a common strategy for their election-related activities. The key speakers were Srdan Dizdarevic (Helsinki Committee for Human Rights), Strahinja Curkovic (PEC member) and Bojan Lalic (Glas 99 - Croatia).
In a very consensual atmosphere the participants adopted a document presenting the working principles of the NGO Coalition 2000 with regard to their involvement in the pre-election phase and their focus of activities for the coming months. The work of the coalition will concentrate on pleading for the adoption of the new election law, voter education and motivation, monitoring of political party campaigns and of the election results. Two subgroups were established on youth and women issues. The Coalition agreed to appeal to donors in order to receive support to run acentral public campaign before the elections.
