Political parties warned that attacks against Bosnia and Herzegovina media outlets must cease. Commission considers sanctions under electoral code
SARAJEVO 22 June 2000
SARAJEVO, 22 June 2000 - The Provisional Election Commission (PEC) discussed today the recent upsurge of attacks against journalists and media houses throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The PEC views this recent series of attacks to have been precipitated by political parties and their leaders. This applies not only to Dnevni Avaz but to others who have recently come under politically motivated pressure, including by tax and financial authorities. These actions are
Politically motivated and are direct violations of articles 701 and 704, the PEC's Electoral Rules of Conduct.
The PEC demands that such actions cease, and will not tolerate intimidation, censorship or closure of media in the pre-election period in violation of the electoral code of conduct. If these efforts do not cease immediately, the PEC will act and apply sanctions.
