Help line to protect journalists' rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina
SARAJEVO 28 April 2000
SARAJEVO, 28 April 2000 - In commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina will launch a help line campaign for the protection of journalists' rights. The help line is another step in OSCE efforts to put a halt to the disturbing trend of violence and threats aimed at undermining a free and independent media in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Regan McCarthy, OSCE Senior Advisor for Media Affairs, will hold a press conference to brief media on the Help Line and to officially present a survey on intimidation and harassment of journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dr McCarthy's presentation will be complemented by the reports of two journalists - Jelena Mrkic of Slobodna Bosna and Radio FERN's Mimo Sahinpasic - who will address the ways journalists' rights can be encroached upon.
The Press Conference will take place on Wednesday, 3 May 2000, at 14:00 hours in the Coalition Press Information Center (CPIC) in the Sarajevo Tito Barracks. All media is kindly invited to participate at this event.
Press Conferences on the launch of the Help Line campaign will also be held by the OSCE Regional Centers in Banja Luka, Mostar, Sarajevo and Tuzla. Media interested in these events should contact the nearest OSCE Regional Center for more detailed information.
For further questions, please contact Press Officer Bernhard Knoll at the OSCE Press Office at 071 292-153 or 090-135-014.
