OSCE Centre in Almaty to hold workshop on draft environmental information law
ALMATY 11 February 2004
ALMATY, 11 February 2004 - A workshop that will enable environmental non-governmental organizations to discuss the establishment of legal guarantees for access to information on environmental matters will be held in Almaty on 13 February.
It is being organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, together with the Environmental Protection Committee of the Majilis (lower house of parliament) and the Forum of Environmental NGOs.
"Public participation in environmental decision-making is an indispensable tool of democracy building," said Ambassador Rupnik, Head of OSCE Centre in Almaty.
In Kazakhstan, implementation of the Aarhus Convention has reached a phase where introduction of appropriate legislation is needed. The Majilis has drafted an environmental information law, which it has distributed to experts and civil society for comment.
The results of the workshop will be presented at a round table at the Majilis on 17 February.
The event is a further step in the Centre's efforts to promote the provisions of the UNECE Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters, ratified by Kazakhstan in 2001.
Media representatives are invited to attend the workshop on 13 February at 09:30 at the UNDP Outreach Centre, 67 Tole Bi Street.
