OSCE to organize conference on import and storage of radioactive waste in Kazakhstan

ALMATY, 10 September 2001 (OSCE) - On 19 and 20 October, an OSCE-initiated two-day conference focusing on the import and storage of radioactive waste in Kazakhstan is scheduled to take place in the country's capital Almaty.
Import and storage of radioactive waste have become a controversial issue of growing importance among scientists, governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The conference will provide an opportunity for participants to share information and views on the above-mentioned issue. International expertise on the import and storage of radioactive waste will be presented to the participants.
Invitees to the event include representatives from the Kazakh Ministries of Energy and Mineral Resources and of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the Committee on Ecology of the Majilis of Parliament, political parties, scientists as well as non-governmental and international organizations.
The conference, entitled "The voice of civil society in the discussion on import and storage of radioactive waste in Kazakhstan", is to be organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, supported by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), and in close co-operation with the environmental NGO "Tabigat" and the state agency "Kazatomprom"
