Personal Representative of Chairman-in-Office for Central Asia to visit Kazakhstan

ALMATY, 20 June 2001 (OSCE) - Ambassador Wilhelm Höynck, the recently appointed Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for tasks in support of the participating States in Central Asia, will visit Kazakhstan from 22 to 25 June 2001.
At the request of the Chairman-in-Office, Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, Dr. Höynck is traveling to each of the Central Asian OSCE participating States from 17 to 28 June. During his visit, he will meet with governmental, bilateral and international authorities.
Ambassador Höynck will follow up on discussions already initiated by the Chairman-in-Office during his visit to the region at the beginning of June. His mandated also includes identification of future OSCE projects that could be implemented on a regional level in Central Asia.
Dr. Höynck is a career diplomat who joined the German Federal Foreign Service in 1964. He served as OSCE Secretary General from June 1993 to June 1996. For several months in 1999, he acted as Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for Central Asia on behalf of the Norwegian Chairmanship of the OSCE and prepared a report on the enhancement of OSCE activities in Central Asia.
The OSCE has been present in Kazakhstan since 1999. Its activities include initiatives in the various dimensions of security ranging from fostering political dialogue between the Government and civil society to the promotion of gender awareness, environmental awareness, and economic development.
