President of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to visit Kazakhstan, 28 April

ALMATY, 26 April 2001 - The President of the Parliamentary Assembly (PA) of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Mr. Adrian Severin, will visit Kazakhstan on 28 April and 3-4 May 2001 as part of his tour of three of the Central Asian participating states of the OSCE.
On 28 April in Almaty Mr. Severin will meet with representatives of political parties and civic organizations based in the former capital and with OSCE partner NGOs. Following visits to Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Mr. Severin will travel to Astana for meetings with President Nazarbaev, Prime Minister Tokaev, and the Chairmen of the Mazhilis and Senate of Parliament on 3-4 May.
During his visit Mr. Severin plans to discuss involvement by Kazakhstan in the OSCE and in OSCE Parliamentary Assembly activities in particular; creation of a "Trans-Asian Parliamentary Forum" as proposed by the OSCE PA; the "Round Table on Elections" process; and general political, economic, and human rights developments.
Mr. Severin is currently a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament and previously served as Foreign Minister of Romania. In July 2000, he was elected President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, an institution that unites more than 300 parliamentarians from the 55 OSCE participating States.
