ASTANA 17 October 2006
ASTANA, 17 October 2006 - Improving Kazakhstan's institutional and legislative framework to combat corruption in the private sector is the aim of an OSCE-organized meeting that is taking place in Astana today.
The event, "Improving measures to combat corruption in the private sector," was organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, the Foreign Ministry, the Agency on the Fight against Economic and Corruption Crime and the NGO Transparency Kazakhstan. It will bring together representatives of the Government, the business community, non-governmental and international organizations and the media.
"Corruption is a concealed evil, which is difficult to reveal and to fight and which impedes the development of markets, drives away investment, increases the costs of doing business, favours the development of a shadow economy and undermines the rule of law," said Ambassador Vikki, the Head of the OSCE Centre. "Acquaintance with the anti-corruption best practices and relevant international conventions, which will be soon signed by Kazakhstan, is the best way to proceed."
During the roundtable discussion, the Centre and the Agency on the Fight against Economic and Corruption Crime will present a manual for entrepreneurs, focusing on duties and responsibilities of State agencies involved in the fight against corruption.
Andrey Lukin, Deputy Head of the Agency on the Fight against Economic and Corruption Crime, added: "I hope Kazakhstan will soon sign key international conventions, such as the United Nations Convention against Corruption and the Council of Europe Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of Proceeds from Crime."
