Kazakhstani journalists win OSCE awards for reporting on criminal justice reform

ALMATY, 29 December 2005 - Three journalists today received awards for their reporting on lay participation in administration of justice in Kazakhstan, as part of a competition organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
"Introducing lay participation is an important element of the reform of the criminal justice system in Kazakhstan," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, Head of the OSCE Centre in Almaty.
"The journalists have shown their professional skills and were able to impartially and comprehensively review and analyze this issue in the press."
The first prize went to Ms. Laura Kapzhassarova for a series of articles on the introduction of jury trials in Kazakhstan. Second prize was awarded to Ms. Farida Sharafutdinova, and the third prize to Ms. Altinay Mukhamedyarova.
The jury consisted of Kazakhstani lawyers, journalists, representatives of NGOs and OSCE staff members.
The reform of the judicial system in Kazakhstan is supported by the ODIHR and the OSCE Centre in Almaty.
