ALMATY, 17 March 2015 – The transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, the new technological platforms for the distribution of audio-visual content and the business challenges in the digital environment are the focus of an OSCE-supported international conference that began today in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The two-day event was co-organized by the Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan, the United States Agency for International Development, Internews-Kazakhstan as well as the Support and Development of Media Foundation and was supported by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana. It brought together some 100 representatives of media outlets, civil society and academia from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Tajikistan to discuss regional co-operation, exchange experience and develop practical recommendations for managing media companies in the digital era.
“Internet development and the protection of human rights in the digital age are among the OSCE’s priorities. If carried out properly, the digital switchover can safeguard human rights, including freedom of the media and the right to access information,” said Head of OSCE Programme Office in Astana, Ambassador Natalia Zarudna. “If all parties involved in the process co-operate, including broadcasters, producers, resellers and consumer associations, the result is a media landscape that protects plurality of opinion and freedom of expression.”
Director of the Internews Network Office in Kazakhstan, Marat Bigaliev said: “This conference aimed at further improving regional co-operation of independent media outlets will help lay a sound foundation to enhancing the professionalism of regional media and sustainability of its development.”
