OSCE Centre co-organizes meeting on access to information in Kazakhstan
The OSCE Centre in Astana supported a co-ordination meeting of The Right for Access to Information civil society coalition in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 8 December 2014. The meeting aimed to discuss the current national legislation and further promote the drafting and adoption of a law on access to information in compliance with international standards.
The event was co-organized by the Centre together with the the non-governmental organization Internews Kazakhstan for some 40 government officials from the Justice and Investment and Development Ministries and the Agency on Public Service and Countering Corruption. Representatives of the media community, international and non-governmental organizations also took part.
Participants discussed how the coalition can co-operate with government and parliament in further promoting access to information as an important tool for media development and the fight against corruption A list of recommendations is to be elaborated for governmental institutions and civil society on how to achieve this goal in line with the Action Plan on Countering Corruption.
The event is part of the Centre’s long-term efforts to support Kazakhstan in its justice reform and capacity-building efforts with the aim of promoting freedom of expression and effectively countering corruption.
The Right for Access to Information coalition was founded in 2013.
