OSCE Centre supports journalism education in Turkmenistan
ASHGABAT, 24 December 2010 –Future press attachés, foreign correspondents and communications officers took part in an OSCE-organized series of lectures on contemporary global journalism that concluded in Ashgabat today.
The three-day course was organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat in co-operation with the Institute of International Relations under the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan. It targeted third-year students majoring in international journalism who participated in a media training seminar organized by the Centre last year.
The course aimed to enhance the students’ skills needed for their future work and to highlight new developments in the global media environment. The students looked at how to develop messages and effective communication strategies, what impact digital technologies have on journalism and how press and communications officers can benefit from the new media. During the course, the students had a chance to apply the skills to practical assignments and exercises.
“Changing media environment and new technologies offer new opportunities, but at the same time place a great responsibility on journalists and media officers,” said Begoña Piñeiro Costas, the Officer-in-Charge of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat. “Media professionalsmust, on the one hand, keep pace with new developments, and, on the other hand, adhere to general ethical principles of journalism, such as impartiality, objectivity and balanced approach. The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat looks forward to expanding its co-operation with the Turkmenistan authorities in the area of the media development and support to journalism education.”
“This course gave me an opportunity to work with students who demonstrated genuine interest and desire to learn and perfect themselves in their future profession. The skills they obtain, if combined with critical thinking and creativity, could create a foundation for solid professional growth,” said Yevhen Hlibovytsky, a media expert from Ukraine who led the course.
