OSCE Centre organizes human rights legislation courses in Turkmenistan
ASHGABAT, 17 June 2005 - International human rights standards and mechanisms to implement and protect them were the focus of training courses held from 6 to 17 June in Turkmenbashi and Mary.
Organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry, the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (NIDHR) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the courses brought together over 35 representatives of Parliament, the General Prosecutor's office, the police, the Bar Association and the State Border Service.
Experts from the Netherlands and Turkey, as well as from the NIDHR, OSCE and UNHCR discussed topics ranging from the historical development of human rights and rule of law to the implementation of norms of international law through establishing international reporting procedures.
Since 2001, the OSCE Centre has organized three courses on international human rights legislation and plans to hold similar courses in other regions of Turkmenistan next year.
