Turkmen officials learn about prison management in Turkey, with OSCE support
ANKARA, 30 November 2013 – High level representatives of law-enforcement bodies and the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan discussed best practices in prison management during an OSCE-supported working visit to Turkey that concluded in Ankara today.
During the week-long visit, participants learned about the penitentiary system in Turkey, relevant national legislation and practical aspects of prison management. The delegation visited closed and open prisons for women, men and juveniles, as well as the education facility for imprisoned juveniles.
“Efficient prison management is essential for the justice system and requires conditions inside prisons to be brought in line with universally recognized international standards,” said Ambassador Ivo Petrov, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.
“The OSCE Centre organized this study visit as part of its continued support in further advancing the penitentiary system of Turkmenistan, as regular exchanges of practical experiences help enhance the capacity of relevant institutions in prison management.”
The delegation members also had meetings at the General Directorate of Turkish prisons, the Red Crescent Society of Turkey, the Turkish National Police and Foreign Ministry.
