"You Can Do It" project to provide momentum for more women politicians in Albania
TIRANA 8 June 2000
TIRANA, 8 June 2000 - "The Stability Pact is determined to help Albanian women break the vicious circle of political division and work together for higher representation of women in all political decision-making bodies. We consider this as a way to start changing the political culture of Albania, its values, its priorities, its methods."
The promise made in Tirana by Ms. Sonja Lokar, Chair of the Stability Pact Gender Task Force, is being kept. After her successful visit to the Albanian capital on 24-27 May 2000, Ms. Lokar has been making a series of concrete steps to give new momentum to women's representation, following the recommendations of the first conference of Albanian Women's NGOs, organized by the GTF and the OSCE Presence.
Back to Vienna, Ms. Lokar has held a series of meetings with representatives of the OSCE Secretariat, to discuss procedures for the financing of the "Women Can Do It" project in Albania. The project, whose initial budget (70,000 DM) will be covered by the European Community and the Austrian Government, is aimed at the formation of 1,000 future women politicians through a coherent package of initiatives:
Several of these initiatives, organized within the framework of the Albanian National GTF Plan of Action 2000, will be co-ordinated at a local level by the OSCE Presence NGO Officer and Gender Advisor, Ms. Penny Martin. Others will be jointly managed by Ms. Jeta Katro, President of the Millenium Coalition, Ms. Lajla Pernaska, President of Union Gender task Force Albania, and Ms. Lavdie Ruci, Chair of the Committee Women and Family and Chair of the Ad Hoc Stability pact Gender Task Force Sub-table.
All Albanians GTF projects will be evaluated and approved for submission to donors by the Ad Hoc Stability Pact Table for Democratisation and Human Rights, chaired by Ms. Kozara Kati.
