This year, the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media celebrates a decade of dedicated work on the Safety of Female Journalists Online (SOFJO) project, a pioneering initiative launched to address the gender-specific threats faced by women in media, particularly in digital spaces. To mark this milestone, a commemorative high-level event will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 26 November 2025.
The event will celebrate ten years of impact while also looking at the challenges ahead. Following high level opening remarks, the event will feature testimonials from journalists who have been targeted with online violence and from other experts on the topic. The commemoration will provide a platform for networking, reflecting on achievements, sharing lessons learned and exploring strategies to address the evolving landscape of gender-based online violence and its potential escalation to offline harm.
The screening of “A Dark Place” (2018), a powerful SOFJO documentary that remains strikingly relevant today and vividly illustrates the challenges faced by women journalists, will conclude the event.
