The two-day conference will aim to raise awareness and formulate policy recommendations on the need to engage youth in preventing violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (VERLT). High-level government officials and representatives from civil society and international organizations will engage in discussions and share best practices on how to engage youth in countering VERLT, specifically through education, media and art and sports. Three working groups will work on separate thematic issues, on the basis of which policy recommendations for the Central Asian region will be formulated.
Within the thematic areas, special attention will be paid to the specific conditions in the Central Asian region as well as the potential challenges in terms of human rights protection and judicial independence when implementing policy focused on countering VERLT through youth engagement.
The International Conference is the first of its kind to be hosted in Uzbekistan and is being organized in response to the Ministerial Declarations On Strengthening OSCE efforts to Prevent and Counter Terrorism, adopted under the German Chairmanship in 2016, and the Declaration On Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Radicalization That Lead to Terrorism, adopted in 2015 under the Serbian Chairmanship.
