A one-day training seminar on "Protection of freedom of expression and hate speech vocabulary in the Internet" will be supported by the Office in close co-operation with the NGO “Legal Media Centre.” Some 30 journalists, representatives of law-enforcement bodies and judges will discuss the relationship between media and hate speech policies and ways to enhance co-operation between governments, civil society and media organizations. Together with experts from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan the participants will analyse number of selected Internet resources and print media to identify the level of vocabulary that is used by journalists and Internet users as well as to assess text for potential conflict situations. Based on concrete practical cases the participants will learn how the intolerance in media is shaped through stereotyped visual perception of different social groups and attributed features to them. As a result of the training, the journalists will be equipped with the tools to counter hate speech in the media and on the Internet, mechanisms to reduce the potential harm from a malicious Internet environment and destructive human behaviour including trolling, cyber-bullying and hate speech.
The event is in line with the Office’s activities aimed at promoting media freedom and freedom of expression in line with the OSCE principles and commitments.
