Montenegro: Engaging Male Politicians in Achieving Gender Equality in Politics
When

Political and elected offices are still too often seen as a “men’s issue,” while advancing gender equality remains perceived as a “women’s issue.” As a result, the meaningful engagement of male politicians in achieving gender equality remains an untapped resource for transforming political institutions and ensuring sustainable progress.
This two-day strategic planning workshop will:
- Facilitate exchange among male and female politicians, representatives of political parties, civil society, and gender equality institutions;
- Raise awareness of good practices and existing initiatives on engaging men for gender equality in politics;
- Advocate for stronger focus on engaging male politicians as transformative actors in future policy and programme development; and
- Present action-oriented guidance from ODIHR’s Sarajevo Tool for Engaging Male Politicians in Achieving Gender Equality in Politics.
The workshop will gather a balanced group of 20–25 participants, including members and senior staff of the Parliament of Montenegro, representatives of political party leaderships and women’s and youth wings, municipal councillors, and representatives of civil society organisations, governmental gender equality bodies and international partners.
Background
Men are significantly overrepresented in legislative and executive bodies across the OSCE region, particularly in leadership roles. Engaging them as allies and champions of gender equality is essential for building gender-responsive political institutions and reversing current backsliding trends. This workshop aims to inspire reflection and action among political leaders on transforming political culture, countering resistance to gender equality, and making concrete commitments for inclusive and balanced leadership.
